Relationships built over years
The captains, hotel and fish processors are people Randy knows personally, not vendors selected from an online list.
About Randy McMurray
The Rodfather Tours grew from years of taking family and friends into Baja California and hearing the same question before every trip was over: when are we going again?
The story
My mother is from Tijuana. I have been going down into Baja California my whole life, fifty-seven years of it. Crossing that border does not feel like travel to me. It feels like going somewhere familiar.
Years ago I started taking my son down to the Sea of Cortez. Then my brother came. Then my nephew. Then friends. Every single time, before we had even made it home, somebody would ask when we were going again.
The last trip I ran had twenty people on it. I organised every part of it myself and did not take a dollar, because I enjoy it that much. Somewhere in there I realised that what I had been doing for free for years was something a lot of people wanted and could not figure out how to do themselves.
So I went to the captains, the hotel, and the people who handle the fish, all of whom I have known for years, and asked whether we could do this properly. They were all in. That is how The Rodfather Tours started.
Just show up for the experience. I take care of everything for you.
What I believe
I come from a Hispanic family, and in my culture everything happens together. We gather together, we eat together, we celebrate together. The world feels crazy right now, and I would rather get back to the basics of family and friendship.
That is also why I do not exclude anybody. Bring your daughter, bring your dad, bring the friend who has never fished. Everyone can be included and everyone can have a good time.
The day job
I still work full time supplying windows and doors for luxury homes across the southwestern United States.
That is a career spent getting details right on projects where nobody is allowed to make mistakes. It turns out that is exactly the skill this takes.
When people trust me with their family, their time and their trip into Baja, the details matter.
Transportation, lodging, boats, captains, permits, processing and the timing between them all have to work together. Randy remains your point of contact from San Diego to Baja and back.
Personal responsibility
Randy does not hand the experience to strangers after you book. The relationships, transportation and trip coordination remain personal throughout the journey.
The captains, hotel and fish processors are people Randy knows personally, not vendors selected from an online list.
Randy drives the van himself and stays with the group throughout the experience.
Bring your children, your parents, your friends or the guest who has never picked up a fishing rod.
Built around fishing
Bring your family or the people you have been meaning to spend time with. Randy will handle the trip from San Diego to Baja and back.
