The trip that keeps getting postponed

You have probably talked about a trip like this for years.

Maybe it is with your son. Maybe your daughter. Maybe your dad. Maybe it is the same group of friends you keep saying you need to get together with again.

The problem usually is not wanting to go. It is everything that has to happen before you can.

All the details that keep getting in the way:

Boats
Hotels
Gear
Permits
Transportation
Crossing the border
Meals
Fish processing
Getting everybody to agree on dates

Eventually somebody says, we will figure it out next year. And next year becomes the year after that.

One payment. One point of contact.

The Baja trip without the Baja planning.

You pay once. From there, there is nothing left for you to arrange, book, carry, or worry about.

Local knowledge. Personal responsibility.

Fifty-seven years of crossing that border.

My mother is from Tijuana. I have been going down into Baja California my entire life. Driving down there does not feel like travel to me, it feels like going somewhere familiar.

The captains, the hotel, and the people who handle the fish are not vendors I found online. They are friends I have known for years. When I bring a group down, I am bringing them to people I trust, and they know it.

I drive the van myself. I am with you the whole way.

The Rodfather experience

Three nights. Two days on the water. Everything in between.

We leave from San Diego and drive down together. Five pangas, four anglers to a boat, on the water at the same time. A welcome dinner when we arrive, an awards banquet before we head home, and a lot of hours in between that nobody planned and everybody remembers.

Who comes

Bring the people you have been meaning to spend time with.

It begins with fishing. Who you bring is what makes the trip yours.

01

Fathers and sons

The trip that started all of this.

02

Fathers and daughters

Same water, same result. Nothing about this is a boys-only trip.

03

Whole families

Parents and kids together, at a family rate. Not everyone has to fish. Some of the best days are spent in the coves.

04

Friends

The group you have been saying you need to get away with again.

05

Private and corporate groups

Larger parties, teams, or a group that wants the whole trip to itself. Get in touch and we will build it around you.

Why this exists

It started with my son.

My son is twenty-six now. He has his own life, like he should.

But every time one of these trips gets close, something changes. We start talking about it. Planning it. Getting excited about it together. And for a little while after we get home, we are still talking about everything that happened.

That is what made me realize this was bigger than fishing.

The first thirty

About thirty people have made this trip with me. Every one of them asked when we were going again.

Until now, everybody who came was a friend or family member and nobody paid me a dollar. The last trip was twenty of us across five boats. By the end of the week people were already asking me to book next year.

A tradition worth collecting

Every trip leaves you with something.

The fish eventually gets eaten. The pictures end up on your phone.

But every person who makes the trip goes home with a Rodfather coin.

One trip. One coin. Come back next year and earn another.

Someday you will look at the collection and remember exactly who was there for every one.
